I like to pretend the fireworks are for me 😁.... since this is my day, and I'm into fun facts, heres a little history on birthdays: until the invention of the calendar, birthdays were not celebrated. The earliest mention of a birthday was around 3,000 B.C.E. and was in reference to a Pharaoh’s birthday, studies imply, however, that this was not their birth into the world, but their “birth” as a god. The birthday cake and candles can be attributed to the Greeks. They offered moon shaped cakes lit with candles to recreate the glowing radiance of the moon and the lunar goddess Artemis’ perceived beauty. The candles also symbolized the sending of a signal or prayer. Blowing out the candles with a wish is another way of sending that message to the gods. Due to its pagan roots, Christians used to see celebrating birthdays as a celebration of evil. This lasted the first few hundred years the Christian church existed, until they recognized the birth of Jesus in an attempt to recruit those who celebrated the Roman holiday Saturnalia. Cake used to only be something the rich could afford. The Industrial Revolution allowed birthday celebrations in all cultures to all walks of life. The required ingredients became more available, this along with advances in mass production, allowed bakeries the option of offering customers pre-made cakes at more affordable prices.... I'll be smashing some affordable cakes later, with my own twist, so as not to be basic 😁
